Covid-19 vaccination booster project

The Covid-19 pandemic introduced unprecedented workforce challenges to all healthcare organisations, including NHS Professionals. As the largest public health emergency in the history of the NHS, NHS Professionals played a vital role in assisting the huge national effort to roll out the initial vaccination programme. Following on from that and responding to the government mandate to increase the roll out of vaccinations, NHS Professionals swiftly started to recruit, onboard, train, and deploy a huge number of vaccine staff across the country for the booster programme.

Having implemented LearnSpace, a bespoke learning management system previously, the NHS Professionals team turned to Skills for Health to support them in preparing for their national vaccination booster project. Skills for Health were proud to support NHS Professionals in their vaccination booster programme, responding to frontline requirements and working in close partnership with them to implement an efficient and structured onboarding process within LearnSpace.

Speedy implementation

The main challenge for the NHS Professionals team was time. They needed to train vaccination staff to support the accelerated roll out of the booster jab and they needed to do it quickly. At Skills for Health, we truly understand the importance of quick and easy access to essential healthcare training, so we provided a complete solution within 10 days – from initial scoping, right through to implementation. This enabled the NHS Professionals team to rapidly train and deploy vaccination staff, to assist the continued response to Covid-19.

The solution

  • Setup a combination of eLearning courses, including our Skills for Health Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) eLearning and specialist National Vaccination courses.
  • Mass onboarding of new recruits via bulk imports and integration with the NHS Professionals recruitment and CRM platform.
  • Automatic enrolment to the correct training program level according to the learner’s experience, and role. This method applied to multiple job roles, including vaccinators, healthcare support workers, and administrators.
  • Daily scheduled compliance reports to enable a quick access to candidate compliance status.
  • Functionality to upload candidates’ previous training records to avoid duplication of training.
  • Dedicated support team to proactively assist the NHS Professionals team.
Twenty years ago, this would’ve been almost impossible. Without digital technologies, there is no way that we would’ve been able to mobilise an army of paid vaccinators as quickly as we did and at such scale. Just as mRNA technologies accelerated the development of vaccines, it is cloud computing that allowed for the rapid onboarding, training and deployment of vaccination staff. Online access to learning meant that we could onboard and train vaccinators in record time.

The results

  • Over 8000 vaccination team members were onboarded to the LearnSpace management system.
  • A simplified deployment process – automated learner enrolment saved the NHS Professionals team a lot of manual administration and enabled new recruits to automatically access the relevant training programme.
  • A better candidate experience – training and compliance programmes were targeted to ensure recruits only needed to complete what was required.
  • Improved functionality to upload candidates’ previous training records facilitated a better candidate experience.
Skills for Health were honoured to be involved in the NHS Professionals National Vaccination Booster project. The LMS team quickly planned delivery and implementation and have continued to support NHS Professionals to ensure all systems were integrated. This successful project has shown what can be achieved with the right technology and communication between Skills for Health and NHS Professionals
