Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting Autistic People

Background

Health Education England has funded the development of a new autism core capabilities framework for health and care staff, and staff in organisations with public facing responsibilities. The framework will span all ages.

The purpose of the framework is to support development and planning of the workforce, and to inform the design and delivery of education and training programmes.

The project delivery team includes people working for Skills for Health, the National Autistic Society, Opening Minds Training and Consultancy and Skills for Care. This group includes some autistic people and people with experience of having autistic family members.

We also have a steering group which is largely drawn from the autism workforce task and finish group, including representatives of The Autism Alliance and The National Autistic Taskforce.

Development of the framework

The first stage of the framework development included desk research, consultation with the project steering group and 10 half-day co-production groups in January 2019, open to individuals, family members and workers. In addition, further consultation workshops were held with children and young people during May 2019.

A draft of the framework was available for consultation during June 2019 and the framework is scheduled for final completion during summer 2019.
