Healthcare organisations face a familiar challenge. Statutory and mandatory training needs to be completed regularly to help maintain essential knowledge and compliance, but healthcare staff are already working under significant time pressures.
For learners who have completed the same training before, working through every piece of content again can mean spending valuable time revisiting knowledge they already understand. Repeatedly asking people to complete learning they already know can also create frustration and disengagement, turning training into something to get done as quickly as possible, rather than a meaningful opportunity to learn.
That matters beyond the individual course. If mandatory training repeatedly feels like something to endure rather than something that enables people to perform effectively, it can influence the wider learning culture of an organisation.
The challenge, then, is to make refresher training more efficient without losing sight of what really matters: meaningful learning and assurance.
What if there were a way?
A smarter approach to mandatory refresher training: From repetition to targeted learning
Skills for Health has developed a new approach to healthcare refresher training through Adaptive Refresher Courses.
Rather than every learner following the same learning journey, adaptive learning begins by establishing what the individual already knows.
Each module starts with an assessment. Where a knowledge gap is identified, the learner completes the required learning before reassessing. Where they demonstrate existing knowledge, they can move on without unnecessarily repeating the module or clicking through content they already understand.
The principle is simple: Assess what you know. Address what you don’t.
The aim isn’t to reduce the learning required for compliance. It’s to make sure the learning experience is proportionate to what each learner actually needs.
Fast-track the learning, not the assurance
That distinction matters.
Adaptive Refresher Courses aren’t designed to turn mandatory training into an assessment-only exercise or provide a shortcut around essential learning.
Instead, they provide a structured pathway that uses assessment to identify where further learning is needed. Where a knowledge gap exists, the learner completes the relevant content. And where the appropriate refresher period has expired, they’re required to complete the full learning route again.
By focusing attention on the areas that genuinely need refreshing, adaptive learning offers an alternative to simply clicking through familiar content or repeatedly attempting questions until the correct answer is reached.
A more engaging way to refresh knowledge
Adaptive Refresher Courses also feature interactive chatbot simulations, helping learners explore what’s changed in relevant guidance since they last completed their training.
For statutory and mandatory training that staff may have encountered several times before, this offers a more engaging way to focus attention on what’s new, what’s changed and what they need to know now.
The result is a refresher experience designed to make learning feel more relevant, purposeful and personalised.
How much workforce time could adaptive refresher training save?
The potential time saving is significant.
Initial modelling suggests Adaptive Refresher Courses could save more than four hours of learning time per employee across a full 19-course Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) refresher programme, potentially reducing refresher learning time by around 55%.
That’s based on an average potential saving of approximately 13 minutes per course.
For a large healthcare workforce, those minutes can quickly add up. Time that would otherwise be spent repeating familiar learning could potentially be released back to patient care and other priorities.
But not every benefit can be measured in minutes. Recognising what learners already know shows respect for their existing knowledge and experience, as well as the value of their time. By focusing their effort where learning is genuinely needed, adaptive learning can create a more purposeful experience and help reinforce a culture where learning is valued as an enabler, rather than something to begrudgingly complete.
Crucially, greater efficiency doesn’t come at the expense of meaningful learning or assurance.
That’s why our proposition is simple: Adaptive learning. Uncompromised compliance.
Adaptive Refresher Courses are designed to make CSTF refresher training more targeted while maintaining the assurance healthcare organisations need.
Less unnecessary repetition. More targeted learning. More purposeful use of valuable workforce time.

We’re now offering healthcare organisations a free trial of Adaptive Refresher Courses across selected CSTF modules.
It’s an opportunity to experience the adaptive approach first-hand, see what the learner journey looks like and explore the potential benefits for your workforce.
*Estimated time savings are based on initial modelling, including average potential savings of approximately 13 minutes per course across a full 19-course CSTF refresher programme. Actual savings may vary and will be evaluated and validated through implementation.
