Workforce planning periodic table

Our workforce development and planning experts at Skills for Health have created a periodic table to help present the often complex world of strategic workforce planning.

This resourceful tool has been expertly crafted to support you; your team and your organisation with visualising and exploring how integral parts of worforce planning are interconnected.

What does it do?

We recognise that the terms “workforce development” and “workforce planning” can have many meanings, so we’ve mapped out the most popular areas as key elements to visualise and connect purpose, strategy, delivery and outputs as well as life cycles, evaluation and outcomes. This way, you can see how different activities can blend and inform projects and programmes, helping you visualise the bigger picture.

With the workforce planning periodic table you can:

  • Spot gaps in knowledge: Use the periodic table to identify the top 5 elements that are “unknowns” in terms of knowledge or expertise. You can do this as a solo activity or as part of a group. This can help you prioritise knowledge or expertise gaps that need to filled.
  • Find priorities and challenges: Use it to identify the top 5 priority areas or top 5 challenges that are causing blockers for development. This can be help shape a prioritised business case for change and or action/delivery plan.
  • Map a clear path: Working from left to right, plot a course from purpose to outcomes, identify the “key line of sight” activities that must form the foundation of improvement work. This process allows you to form distinct workstreams in a project or improvement programme.
