Competences/ NOS

As the Sector Skills Council responsible for the health sector, one of our main functions is to develop, manage and update competences/NOS as the needs of the sector change, as work patterns shift, and as new operational practices, legislation and technologies are introduced. This ensures competences/NOS remain useful and effective.

Review of Health National Occupational Standards

Skills for Health is pleased to be starting a review of National Occupational Standards. The review work, due to be complete by March 2021, will focus on circa 90 NOS used widely across the UK to inform workforce development activity and, in particular, to inform apprenticeships and qualifications for Healthcare Support Workers.

NOS under review will include a selection from the following suites:

  • Clinical Health Skills
  • Children and Young People’s Health Services
  • Diabetes
  • Endoscopy
  • Emergency, Urgent and Scheduled Care
  • General Healthcare
  • Health Informatics
  • Infection Prevention and Control
  • Perioperative Care Support

Engaging and consulting with stakeholders from all 4 home nations is key to this work to ensure that the NOS are applicable and transferable across the UK.
