On February 21st, 2020, Mental Health Nurses’ Day looks to celebrate the work of mental health nurses across the UK, promoting working in mental health as a fantastic career choice for people of all ages and backgrounds.

We are currently working with Health Education England to develop a new Mental Health Nursing Competence and Career Framework to show existing and potential mental health nurses that there are a wealth of career opportunities across the career framework levels of the mental health nursing role.

The framework will describe the core skills, knowledge and behaviours that mental health nurses need, and its uniqueness as an inspiring career which offers quality and meaningful clinical roles from the newly qualified registered nurse right through to advanced practice to consultant roles. It also shows that progression can be through a clinical or managerial route. It will demonstrate that mental health nursing is a varied profession with many different specialisms working in a variety of settings from acute wards, specialist units, the community and in people’s homes, and provides the opportunity to work with all age groups from children through to adolescents, adults and older people. We believe that the framework will inspire new applicants to the field of mental health nursing that see it as a long-term fulfilling career.

The Framework is being developed collaboratively with the Mental Health Nursing Directors Forum, and mental health nurses from across England and from all career levels, as well as with other sector representatives.

The first stakeholder event, held in January, was well attended and the excellent outputs were used to inform the first drafts. These will be reviewed by the attendees at the upcoming event on February 13th who will provide a comprehensive range of mental health nursing expertise.

The final framework development will be completed by the end of March 2020.

If you would like to contribute to the framework’s development with examples of good practice, case studies of mental health nursing roles, or be kept up to date with progress, please submit, or register your interest here by 29th February.
