Extending Participation
Extending Participation is the UK-wide terminology adopted by Skills for Health for promoting, championing and facilitating improved access to learning that results in:
- better access to employment
- ongoing development of employability skills including:
- fundamental underpinning of skills such as literacy, numeracy, language and ICT
- wider development of soft skills such as communication, interpersonal skills, team working and critical thinking
- increased opportunities for ALL healthcare staff to improve their skills – and at the same time attain recognition and accreditation for learning they undertake
- progression in relation to careers, learning and achievement
- increased learner confidence and motivation.
We work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, including employers, trades unions, awarding bodies and professional organisations to promote improved access to learning. The way access to learning is achieved varies by country due to differing skills priorities and government policies in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
In England, the Extending Participation strategy is referred to as Widening Participation.
