The Career Framework for Health is an overarching resource for NHS and partner organisations, which can aid workforce flexibility locally, regionally and nationally.

The Career Framework is indicatively linked to the Knowledge and Skills Framework and can be used for:

  • Service reviews
  • Skill mix reviews
  • Workforce planning and development
  • Role description and redesign
  • Appraisal, self appraisal and personal development.

Case studies demonstrating how people have used the Career Framework can be found in the Related Documents section.

With so many job titles across the health sector, there’s a need for a common language and currency to assist competence-based workforce planning and career development. The framework provides this by helping:

  • Individuals demonstrate their achievements and identify potential opportunities for progression
  • Healthcare organisations achieve a workforce with maximum flexibility ensuring national consistency, in line with local needs.
