Youth 14-19 Diploma
Diplomas are a new qualification for 14-19 year olds that are available in schools, colleges and other education institutions.
One of the first diplomas to be offered is the Diploma in Society, Health and Development (SHD) which commenced first delivery in September 2008.
Developed with employers, schools and colleges and universities, each of the 14-19 Diplomas provide a motivating and challenging programme for young people.
This is just one of 14 new Diplomas being developed. Each is aimed at all ability levels and available at level 1 (equivalent to 4-5 GCSEs), level 2 (equivalent to 5-6 good GCSEs) and level 3 (equivalent to 3 A-levels). The emphasis is on functional skills so that young people are equipped for education and training at a higher level and have the skills and knowledge valued by employers.
Diplomas enable progression to degree level qualifications or career opportunities. The Diploma will ‘stretch’ all young people through academic learning in schools/colleges combined with application in a working environment. The aim is to increase the participation rate in full time education for 17 year olds from the current 75% to 90% by 2015.
The Society, Health and Development Diploma is one of the first five Diplomas. The initial wave of teaching started in September 2008 and by 2013 all young people will be entitled to study for the Diploma.
The Diploma has been developed in partnership by SkillsActive, Skills for Care, Skills for Health and Skills for Justice.
