Apprenticeships/Modern Apprenticeships offer people the opportunity to gain an insight into a challenging and very rewarding career. They are normally available to anyone aged between 16 and 25 in England. In Wales there is no upper age limit for Modern Apprenticeships .
From August 2007 a number of adult apprenticeships have been made available in England.
There are a variety of Apprenticeships available across the health sector. The most popular being Health and Social Care which is a shared framework across England and Wales (H&SC framework Welsh version) and has been developed by Skills for Health with Skills for Care and the Council for Wales
This has been so successful that in 2006 over 3,500 apprenticeship certificates were awarded in this field and it prepares people in a variety of roles in both the health and care sectors.
Apprenticeship frameworks are also available in:
The total number of apprentices completing the frameworks continues to increase and in 2006 almost doubled to over 4000 and is expected to exceed 5000 for 2007. These Apprentices now have an excellent foundation for their chosen career in the health sector.
For information about how to apply for an apprenticeship completion certificate please see the Certification page.
The apprentice framework for England and Wales is based on a blueprint agreed by the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) in England and the Welsh Assembly.
What Level?
If you are doing a Foundation/Modern Apprenticeship learners will be working at what is known as Level 2. This will involve the apprentice doing an academic qualification known as a Level 2 technical certificate,, usually at a college of further education or with an independent training provider; and this provides the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ level 2 and a Level 1 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.
An Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship will be at Level 3 with both the Technical Certificate and NVQ at this level and the Key Skills at Level 2. Again these can be taken at a further education college or with an independent training provider.
Over 300 training providers across England and Wales offer health related apprenticeships.
