From the 1st September 2007, the Widening Participation in Learning Strategy Unit (WPSU) for England moved to Skills for Health. The Unit is now led by Jill Brunt, who has been leading work on widening participation for a number of years, and is continuing the strategic direction established by Professor Bob Fryer's report "Learning for a Change in Healthcare". Professor Fryer has moved into a new role as Chief Learning Advisor to the Department of Health. He retains an interest in and support of the Widening Participation Unit, but is not involved in the management of the Unit.
Work is progressing on the integration of the Unit into Skills for Health, which is resulting in gaining greater benefits for the Widening Participation agenda through a range of Skills for Health programmes of work.
As Professor Fryer has noted, 'Skills for Health is now the natural home for widening participation and I believe that this move will enable WPSU to retain a distinct profile. There is excellent synergy with the Sector Skills Council agenda, taking forward the Leitch findings and I look forward to seeing the excellent work carried out by the unit continuing into the future.'
