Skills for Health has produced its report on sector qualifications following an extensive review of how well existing qualifications meet the needs of the health sector. An important part of this visionary work has been our discussions with the sector about how to improve education and training for the future.
Production of the Sector Qualifications Strategy (SQS) involved research and analysis of the qualifications available to those working in the NHS, private, independent and voluntary sectors. Its scope covered qualifications that are part of the National Qualifications Framework. It did not cover 14-19 provision, or provision with Higher Education, although routes out of and into these areas of learning were considered.
As part of the review, Skills for Health has carried out an extensive consultation with employers and many other key stakeholders in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, including regulatory bodies, funding bodies and strategic organisations representing the four countries of the UK.
This first phase of the work culminated in the Sector Qualifications Strategy which was submitted to Sector Skills Development Agency at the end of August, and we are now starting on developing action plans to realise the aims of the strategy.
We look forward to the SQS leading to a more harmonised range of qualifications that will ensure learning programmes available across the UK are more effective in equipping people with the skills that employers want, and that learners need, to secure and maintain employment.
