Image: Pharmacy NOS.Skills for Health is pleased to announce that the revised National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Pharmacy have been approved by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills. These NOS describe activities undertaken by Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy or Dispensing Assistants.

A project to revise the suite of Pharmacy NOS commenced in April 2015. The project convened stakeholder groups to review and revise the NOS, with a wider public consultation held over the summer 2015. Responses from the consultation were reviewed by the project Working Group and the NOS were amended during the autumn. The final Working Group was held in January 2016 where the final NOS were agreed. A tracking document has been produced which lists the revised NOS. This document also provides useful signposting to other NOS which could be appropriate for Pharmacy Technicians or Pharmacy or Dispensing Assistants which are outside the core pharmacy activities undertaken by these roles. The tracking document can be viewed here.

With the General Pharmaceutical Council’s (GPhC) review of the education and training standards for Pharmacy Technicians underway, the revised NOS can now be used as a starting point for re-development of the qualifications by the Awarding Organisations once the General Pharmaceutical Council has published the updated education and training standards for Pharmacy Technicians.
