Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ)

Skills for Health champions the benefits of workforce learning and development based on Competences / National Occupational Standards (NOS). In Scotland SVQs are used to assess occupational competence.  The SVQs form the basis of the Modern and Technical Apprenticeships in Scotland.

These are some of the current SVQs:

SVQs in Healthcare Support (Clinical and Non-Clinical)

SVQs for Healthcare Support (Clinical and Non-Clinical) at levels 2 and 3 have been developed for support staff working in Scotland NHS Boards and Scottish employees working in the private health care sector. Please click here for further information and copies of the qualifications.

SVQ in Health and Social Care

The SVQ in Health and Social Care is jointly owned by Skills for Health and Skills for Care and Development. It is offered at levels 2, 3 and 4 and is aimed at staff employed in assistant roles which span health and social care.

The SVQ in Social Services and Healthcare is jointly owned by Skills for Health and Skills for Care and Development. The SVQ is offered at levels 2 and 3. It is aimed at staff employed in assistant roles which span health and social care. Learners can enrol on this SVQ from February 2014.

SVQ Dental Nursing

The S/NVQ in Dental Nursing when taken with the required knowledge qualification allows registration with the General Dental Council as a Dental Nurse.

SVQ in Pharmacy

Undertaking the Level 3 SVQ with the knowledge qualification will support registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician (subject to the individual meeting the additional registration requirements).

NHS Education Scotland’s SQA VQ Finder

The VQ finder helps ‘demystify’ the VQ landscape for NHS Scotland staff members, managers and those responsible for commissioning qualifications for the workforce. It provides links to a range of organisations who can provide information and support and also gives guidance on the:

  • range of VQs available in Scotland (with a focus on SCQF 5 – 8) which are relevant to different job families within the NHS workforce
  • different types of VQs available and how to choose the most appropriate
  • awarding bodies and responsible for the different qualifications in the map
  • range of providers who can help staff access the qualifications
  • resources available to support access to and progression between qualifications.
