Principles of Infection Prevention
This course provides an opportunity to review in more depth the use of standard infection prevention and control measures in their own occupational setting. It is divided into five healthcare roles that learners can choose from.
Overview This course deals with the principles involved in preventing healthcare associated infections. The course assessment is based on an NHS role-based scenario and how you should apply your principles of infection control knowledge in practice.
- Module 1: Chain of Infection and Causative organisims
- Module 2: Principles of Asepsis (Clinical Staff Only)
- Module 3: Hand Hygiene
- Module 4: Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Module 5: Clean and Save Environment for Care.
What will learners get out of it
- Ability to describe the chain of events that leads to infection
- Understand how to adhere to guidelines for good hand hygiene
- Able to outline the steps involved in performing an aseptic technique (Clinical Staff Only)
- Learn how to use personal and protective equipment when appropriate
- Understand how to adhere to guidelines for a clean and safe environment
- The course contributes towards the Saving Lives delivery course to reduce HCAIs like MRSA, and the NPSA ‘Clean Your Hands’ campaign
Who is the course for The course is tailored according to the learners’ role within the health sector. Learners select the most appropriate role to their position.
Assessment The modules are followed by a scenario-based assessment designed to encourage staff to personalise what they have learnt and make it relevant to their own work environment. Learning progress and test results can be tracked by managers for internal development and learners can keep a certificate of completion for CPD.
Accreditations & Endorsements This course is part of the infection prevention suite of courses which are nationally endorsed. It was developed with the University of West London.
