Infusion Devices

Supports health and care staff to gain competence and confidence in using infusion devices, leading to a safer and more efficient way of working for both staff and patients

Overview
This e-learning course provides a generic overview of infusion safety and must be complemented by practical training on specific pumps. The course starts with a diagnostic test to identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses. A pathway will then indicate the sections they should study. There is an option to review all sections of the course if required. Learners can move on to the formal assessment when they are ready. The course focuses mainly on the administration of intravenous infusions via a peripheral route. However, the principles covered can also be applied to more involved infusion techniques, such as centrally delivered intravenous
infusions or sub-cutaneous infusions.

  • Module 1: Overview
  • Module 2: Drug preparation and administration
  • Module 3: Device selection
  • Module 4: Infusion start-up
  • Module 5: Operation & monitoring
  • Module 6: Close down and dismantling.

This is a blended learning course that combines face to face and on-line learning.

What will learners get out of it

  • Understanding of how to use infusion devices properly
  • Greater competence and confidence amongst practitioners
  • Greater patient confidence in individuals understanding
  • Greater ability and understanding to help reduce Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI)
  • Ability to support organisations to deliver Risk Management and HCC standards. (The course is mapped to HCC standards.)

Who is the course for
The course is aimed at both experienced and inexperienced staff in the health and care sector who use infusion devices.

Assessment
The course is linked to the Safe Use of Infusion Devices, City & Guilds qualification (Level 3). When learners are ready, they can take the formal 1hr online theory test (similar to the diagnostic) to demonstrate understanding of the concepts underpinning infusion-related practice. Learners will also take a practical assessment in which they demonstrate competent use of one volumetric pump and one syringe pump in a ward-based and simulated environment. The complete learning course may involve up to 40 learning hours in total.

Learning progress and test results can be tracked by managers for internal development and learners can keep
a certificate of completion for CPD.

Accreditations & Endorsements
Developed by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) the course is linked to the City and Guilds Certificate in the Safe Use of Infusion Devices, accredited at FE level 3, and endorsed by the NPSA.
