How to access Labour market intelligence/information on the health sector

Labour market information and intelligence (LMI) is a valuable resource for anyone in the health sector who provides Information, Advice and guidance (IAG) on learning and development.

Skills for Health has a range of tools that will help you

  • Summary LMI reports for careers advisers in  England, Northern Ireland,  Scotland and Wales
  • Labour Market Resources - A range of high quality research and intelligence which bring together all nationally available healthcare sector specific data
  • Careers information on working in the independent sector and for voluntary organisations and volunteering across the health sector
  • Next Step resources - There are LMI resources for Next Step advisers here, supplied by Skills for Health and you can access bite size versions on the Next Step website.
  • Industry fact sheets - Working with the Alliance in Northern Ireland and Scotland we have produced LMI fact sheets, detailing job prospects, relevant skills and entry requirements, plus lots more.
  • Develop your own LMI skills - LMI Learning is an online learning tool aimed at IAG advisers to support their understanding of LMI and its use within guidance practice.

LMI is a complex area and one which is constantly evolving. Becoming familiar with LMI will support:

  • Skills improvement - This could include occupational information, vacancy sources and workforce development trends. This type of information can help you to support staff to make an informed decision
  • Development decisions – You can use LMI to help identify and research work options. For example, if a healthcare assistant is choosing between training as a registered nurse, an assistant practitioner or perhaps moving towards being an allied health therapist, LMI would help you to identify future workforce trends that might guide this decision.
  • New role development – For example, Advanced Practitioners, Assistant Practitioners
