Carers Matter – Everybody’s BusinessCarers Matter – Everybody’s Business was officially launched on the 13th June, as part of Carers Week. The parliamentary reception at 10 Downing Street provided a focal point to highlight the important role that carers play in their communities and society as a whole. The reception, which was part of Carers Week, was sponsored by Skills for Health and Skills for Care.
Carers came from all over the country to meet David Cameron and his ministers to share their experiences and raise their concerns. Skills for Health and Skills for Care met with Mr Cameron and his ministers, and highlighted the work that has been undertaken in training for staff who work with carers, in order to better improve their experience of services. As a result of the work undertaken by Skills for Health, Skills for Care and their partners, the government has said that Carers Matter – Everybody’s Business ‘will enable commissioners to devise bespoke training for their local health and social care workforce’ (Recognised, Valued and Respected; Next Steps for the Carers Strategy HM Govt 2010). The government is committed to improving carers experiences of services by making sure that training on carer awareness is an accepted part of the landscape – in social care, health and other services. The theme for this years' week, ‘The True Face of Carers’, calls for greater recognition and support for the diverse – and often unexpected – range of people who give up their money, time and health to look after somebody else.
