Employability Skills Matrix

Why are Employability Skills important in the health sector?

Unlike occupational or technical skills, employability skills are generic in nature, rather than job specific.  They are often the types of things that can be developed or learnt in one situation and then used in other contexts and situations.

As such they should be highly sought after by health sector employers because they are key to developing a skilled and flexible workforce, made up of individuals who can, for example, solve problems, make effective decisions, communicate, prioritise their workload, and are willing to continuously learn and grow.

Whilst employability skills are not job specific, different jobs do require particular combinations of skills and abilities.

Skills for Health has developed an Employability Skills Matrix aligned with the Career Framework for Health.

It defines not only the employability skills required by new entrants but also the employability skills required to develop and progress within the sector, from entry level to more senior positions.
